In Valdobbiadene, the epidemiological emergency from Covid-19 also stops the Palio delle Contrade, the traditional summer event in the style of "games without borders" scheduled for next 3 and 4 July 2020
The painful decision was made in recent days by the president of the Palio association, Silvia Biasin, together with the 12 contrada leaders: the 20th edition of the event will not take place. Meanwhile, the wooden statuette symbol of the Palio will remain; temporarily in the arms of the district of San Pietro di Barbozza, winner of the 2019 edition.
The organizational commitment and the hope of a return to normalcy for the summer were not enough. Despite the start of "Phase 2", in fact, the green light to the gatherings that events and street demonstrations such as the Palio entail are still too far away. And a party that in two evenings involves about 250 competitors and gathers a thousand spectators today represents an excessive risk.
«We have hoped until the end - explains the president Silvia Biasin - to be able to carry out the 20th edition of our Palio, without stopping the organization, also because we would have liked to give a signal to restart for the whole community; and in particular for the merchants and exhibitors who have always supported us. However, we cannot allow the Palio to risk endangering the health of competitors and that of everyone. With confidence we will enrich the 2021 edition to celebrate a great 20th birthday of our event.
